Anal Toys Guide: Everything You Need to Know

Anal toys are one of the most searched and least openly discussed categories in adult retail. The gap between curiosity and confident purchasing is usually just information - knowing what the different products do, what is safe, and how to actually use them. This guide covers all of it.

Why Anal Play?

The anus and surrounding area contain a dense concentration of nerve endings, making it highly responsive to stimulation for all genders. For people with a prostate, anal play offers direct access to the P-spot - many men describe prostate orgasms as more intense than any other type. For everyone else, anal stimulation combined with other play tends to enhance overall arousal and orgasm intensity.

The key to enjoying anal play is simple: go slowly, use plenty of lubricant, and stay relaxed. The anal sphincter is a muscle - it responds to tension by tightening. Discomfort is always a sign to slow down, not push through.

Types of Anal Toys

Butt Plugs

Butt plugs are the most common entry point into anal play. They are designed to be inserted and stay in place - the tapered tip makes insertion easy, the wider middle creates a feeling of fullness, and the flared base sits outside the body to prevent the toy going too far in.

They come in a wide range of sizes, from small beginner plugs to larger advanced options, and in vibrating and non-vibrating versions. They can be worn during other sexual activity - many people wear a plug during vaginal sex or masturbation to add sensation. See our dedicated Butt Plugs Guide for a full breakdown.

Prostate Massagers

Prostate massagers are designed specifically for P-spot stimulation. They are curved to reach the prostate through the anterior wall of the rectum and often include a perineum arm for external stimulation as well. Most come with multiple vibration modes - the prostate responds well to both steady vibration and pulsing patterns.

If prostate stimulation is your primary interest, a purpose-designed prostate massager will be significantly more effective than a general anal toy.

Anal Beads

Anal beads consist of a series of spheres or graduated beads on a string or flexible rod. They are inserted gradually - each bead adds stimulation as it passes the sphincter - and removed during or approaching orgasm, which many people find intensifies the sensation significantly.

Anal beads must have a retrieval ring or handle at the end and a flared base. This is a safety requirement, not a feature. Never use beads on a knotted string, or any set that has no ring, handle or base to hold onto: the rectum can draw the whole thing inward, and retrieving it can mean a hospital visit and surgical removal. Cheap novelty beads on a plain cord are exactly what to avoid.

The gradual size increase makes them a good option for people working up to larger toys.

Anal Dildos

Anal dildos are similar to vaginal dildos but designed specifically for anal use - they typically have a more gradual taper, a flared base, and a smoother surface without texture that could cause discomfort. They are used for deeper penetration and thrusting sensations rather than the "stay in place" function of a butt plug.

Vibrating Anal Toys

Most categories above are available in vibrating versions. Vibration adds another layer of stimulation and can make the whole experience more intense. Remote-controlled vibrating plugs are particularly popular for partner play - one person wears the toy, the other controls it.

Anal Toy Materials and Safety

Body-safe materials are especially important for anal toys because the anal mucosa is more absorbent than other tissue. Stick to:

  • Silicone - the best all-round choice. Non-porous, easy to clean, soft, and durable.
  • Stainless steel or aluminium - non-porous, very easy to clean, excellent for temperature play. Heavier than silicone, which some people prefer.
  • Glass - non-porous and smooth, good for temperature play. Use borosilicate glass only.

Avoid porous materials like jelly rubber or PVC for anal use - they are harder to clean properly and can harbour bacteria even after washing. If you use a porous toy, always cover it with a condom.

Every anal toy must have a flared base, or a retrieval ring or handle in the case of beads. A flared base is mandatory, not a preference. The rectum draws objects inward, and a toy that gets drawn in can require a hospital visit and surgical removal to get it out. Never use a toy anally that does not have one.

The rest of the safety list is short, and none of it is optional:

  • Never go anal to vaginal. Wash the toy properly or change the condom before it goes anywhere near the vagina. Transferring rectal bacteria to the vagina is a leading cause of infection.
  • Do not use numbing or desensitising products. Pain is the warning system that stops you tearing. If you switch it off, you will not find out you have done damage until afterwards.
  • Stop on sharp pain. Pressure and fullness are normal; sharp pain is not, and it means stop. If there is bleeding, stop and seek medical care.
  • The rectum does not self-lubricate. Lubricant is mandatory, and you will need more of it than you think.

Lubricant for Anal Play

Unlike the vagina, the rectum does not self-lubricate. Lubricant is mandatory rather than optional, and you need more than you think. Water-based lubricant is compatible with all toy materials and condoms. Silicone-based lubricant lasts longer but can degrade silicone toys - avoid it with silicone toys unless the product is confirmed safe.

Apply lubricant generously before insertion, and reapply during the session rather than pushing through friction.

How to Start with Anal Toys

For first-timers, start with the smallest size available in a beginner butt plug or anal beads. Do not target a specific size - choose based on comfort. Many people spend several sessions with a small plug before moving to anything larger, and that is the right approach.

Always warm up. The sphincter relaxes with arousal, so starting anal play when you are already aroused makes everything easier. Never force insertion - if it does not go in comfortably, stop.

Cleaning Anal Toys

Wash anal toys thoroughly after every use. Silicone, stainless steel, and glass toys can be boiled for 5 minutes or put through a dishwasher (top rack, no detergent) for deep cleaning. Porous materials should be covered with a condom and replaced regularly. Never share anal toys between partners without thorough cleaning or a fresh condom.
